05 May 2004 Trip to South Africa

I landed in Cape Town at 7:30 AM and met Scott as his plane arrived at 7:45 AM.  After we got our luggage, and rented a car, we headed south towards the cape of Good Hope and Antarctica.  Our destination was Boulder Beach in Simon’s town where we saw African Penguins.  Scott drove on the left for the first time on this part of the trip, and my job was to scream each time I thought we were going to die.  When we arrived at the beach I was hoarse but happy.

After walking the beach and seeing the penguins, we drove back to Cape Town and visited Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and had lunch there.  Kirstenbosch is famous for its gardens, but the small succulent area was rather sparse.

Later afternoon we visited Bruce Bayer at his greenhouse, or I should say screen-house.  The sun was setting and with no light, Bruce graciously invited us back the next day.  We spent the night at the Century City Holiday Inn Express, a beautiful hotel next to a shopping center that is bigger and more opulent than anything I have ever seen in the USA.!
