11 May 2004 Trip to South Africa![]()
This day we got a late start because we had to send some post cards, do our laundry, and get money at the bank. We went to Gerhard’s house about noon, and then set off to Calitzdorp. Here we talked to the farmer and visited an area with him South of town. We first visited the front of the farm, beyond some ostrich corrals, right next to the hills where H. maughanii grows. This is the site of Haworthia truncata var. crassa. Here there were many cantaloupe sized huge Glottiphyllum. Here also we found Aloe longistyla and Avonia papyracea. We then drove with the farmer to the back of the farm and there we saw Haworthia viscosa, a Crassula sp, Gibbeum heathii, Servclumus pacifilm and Fockea crispum. We also found Conophytum truncatum, Haworthia blackburniae, Pachypodium vispinosum, Euphorbia enopla, more Crassula, and a Hoodia colei. We then drove back into Oudtshoorn for dinner and well deserved sleep.
